The Top 10 Cheapest Cars to Insure in the UK |
Insuring a car can be an expensive business and no matter what your age or circumstances are, there will always be some vehicles that are so cost prohibitive to cover, they can be dismissed as an option for the purchaser. Happily, there are some cars that are much less expensive and here are ten of the cheapest cars to insure today.
1. Fiat Punto. The basic Fiat Punto models are all very cheap to insure with the 1.1 litre engine makes being the cheapest of all. As with all vehicles, the insurance group itself will vary depending on which company you use but generally speaking, a Fiat Punto will fall into insurance group 3.
2. Vauxhall Corsa. You can pick up a reliable used Vauxhall corsa very easily and cheaply and they are not expensive to insure either. As with all of these vehicles, the notion of cheaper insurance applies to the base models only so keep that in mind with the Corsa as well.
3. Ford Fiesta. The Ford Fiesta has been in production in some form since 1976 and throughout that time, it has been known for being one of the cheapest cars to insure. Repairs are straightforward and cheap and this is another factor that appeals to all insurers.
4. Renault Clio. Some of the bigger engine Renault Clio’s can be classed up to insurance group 7 but if you can pick up the base, smaller models, you will find that most insurers will list them as group 3, making them among the very cheapest cars to insure.
5. VW Polo. This is another car that has been around for years with the first Polo’s rolling off the production line as far back as 1975. This longevity does help an insurer because they have access to more claims statistics, which in turn can help them maintain cheaper premiums for your Polo.
6. Smart Car. It's no real surprise to see the Smart Cars on this list, as one of their chief selling points is their overall economy. Not only does this apply to the price of the car in the first place, it also extends to the running costs and the price of insurance, with the base models falling into group 3 as a general rule.
7. Vauxhall Astra. If you're looking for a slightly bigger engine, the Astra may be right for you. Once again, there are a number of available models and whilst some will fall into group 14, the smaller engine sizes are rated as low as group 4 for insurance purposes.
8. Peugeot 106. Turning back to the smaller engine cars, Peugeot produce a number of vehicles that are not expensive to insure but the 106 is the cheapest of them all. Most insurers will classify this vehicle as group 3 once again.
9. Seat Ibiza. The most popular car in Seat's range is the Ibiza and with running costs at a minimum, insurance premiums are very low too. Whilst insurance grouping may vary, it is possible to find this vehicle rated as group 3 with some providers.
10. Audi A3. Whilst most of the other vehicles here are in the 'Super Mini' class, the A3 is a little bigger but if you prefer a 1.6 litre engine, the A3 is arguably the cheapest of this size to insure.
